Tony Cattano (1979) is a trombonist and composer. He graduated in Trombone from the "V. Bellini" Music Institute in Catania in 2000.
He approached jazz from a young age, attending seminars led by musicians of international renown: Giorgio Gaslini, Paolo Fresu, Tony Oxley, Franco D'Andrea, Gianluca Petrella.
In 1999 and 2000 he attended the Siena Jazz summer seminars, earning two scholarships — one to represent Siena Jazz and Italy at the 12th international meeting of the I.A.S.J. (International Association of Schools of Jazz) at Berklee School in Boston in June 2001.
From 2001 to 2004 he was a member of "Roy Paci & Aretuska", touring the most important Italian and European pop and alternative music festivals.
He has collaborated with numerous groups, including: Qbeta, Walkway, Antonio Moncada Quintet, Orchestra Jazz del Mediterraneo, Skrunch, As Sikilli Ensemble, Trinkle Trio, Altomaria, Cattano Bros with Carlo Cattano, Massimo Nunzi Jazz Orchestra, Roberto Spadoni Six, Silvia Bolognesi Living Quartet, Paolo Sorge and the Jazz Waiters, Four in Monk, Franco Ferguson, The Inner Room, Pasquale Innarella Jazz Quintet, Mario Raja Big Bang, Silvia Bolognesi Open Combo, Slide Family featuring Gary Valente, Colours Jazz Orchestra, Curva Minore, and many more.
He has performed with: George Gruntz, Bob Mintzer, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler, Tony Scott, David Murray, Gary Valente, Eddie Henderson, Don Byron, Paul Jeffrey, John Tchicai, Keith Tippett, David Liebman, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Rob Mazurek, Jason Moran, Stefano Maltese, Flavio Boltro, Giovanni Guidi, Mauro Ottolini, Francesco Cafiso, Cristina Zavalloni, Javier Girotto, and others.
He has also recorded and performed with pop and alternative artists including: Qbeta, Mau Mau, Teresa De Sio, Piero Pelù, Samuele Bersani, Mannarino, Nada, Mauro Ermanno Giovanardi, Banda Ionica, Ana Popovic, Mario Venuti, John Cale with Orchestra da Camera di Brescia, Diodato, and Vinicio Capossela.
He has performed at numerous Italian and international festivals, including Villa Celimontana Jazz (Rome), Saalfelden Jazz Festival (Austria), Jazz No Jazz (Zurich), Umbria Jazz, MiTo Turin-Milan, Bergamo Jazz Festival, Sudtirol Jazz Festival, Torino Jazz Festival, Parma Jazz Frontiere, "Il Jazz Italiano per le Terre del Sisma" (L'Aquila), San Vito Jazz (Pordenone) and many others.
He taught Jazz Trombone and Ensemble at Siena Jazz University from 2012 to 2020.
Since 2021 he has been teaching Jazz Trombone, Composition Techniques and Ensemble at the "G.B. Martini" Conservatory in Bologna.
